Jalandhar, 29 June (STN)- Lok Sabha member Sushil Kumar Rinku and Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal today started the work of removing soil from the gates of the railway bridge over Sutlej river at village Giddarpindi on Lohian to Ferozepur road, so that the area could be protected from possible floods during the monsoon season.
Lok Sabha member Sushil Kumar Rinku instructed the officers of the Drainage Department present on the spot to complete the work of cleaning the soil which was obstructing the drainage of water as soon as possible. He said that the area should not face any flood situation during the rainy season, so it should be ensured that the soil from under the bridge is removed soon. He said that by removing soil from the gorges, the water would be able to pass under the bridge without any obstruction and would help in preventing the danger of floods in the area.
Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal said that to prevent floods, the main need of the hour is to remove soil to ensure easy drainage of water from under the bridge, for which this important work has been started. He said that there was a continuous demand from the people of the area to remove soil from under the bridge. The Rajya Sabha member said that this work would be personally monitored by him.
During this, the Members of Parliament also reviewed the other self-destructive efforts being made to prevent floods in view of the monsoon. He also directed the officials of the drainage department to ensure timely cleaning of drains and strengthen the vulnerable areas. He said that all these anti-flood works should be completed before the onset of monsoon, so that people do not face any kind of difficulty.
On this occasion, he also praised the efforts being made by the Drainage Department for flood prevention in flood-prone areas.
